CT of the pelvic bones

A scan of the pelvic ring bones (ilium, ischium, pubis), the sacroiliac joints and the hip joints. It is most often ordered after injuries and to detect tumours and metastases in the pelvic bones.

  • Duration5 minutes
  • Contrastnot required
  • Preparationnone
  • Report30 min – 1 hour

What it shows

  • fractures and cracks of the pelvic bones
  • damage to surrounding soft tissues after injury
  • tumours and metastases in the pelvic bones
  • changes in the sacroiliac and hip joints
  • foreign bodies in the pelvic area

When it is recommended

  • pelvic injury, suspected fracture
  • suspected tumour or metastases in the pelvic bones
  • disorders of the sacroiliac and hip joints
  • surgical planning for pelvic fractures and bone disorders
  • clarifying the results of other examinations

Good to know

  • The scan focuses on the bones; pelvic organs and vessels are assessed by separate examinations. If needed (e.g. after a severe pelvic injury) the scan area can be extended.
